South Jordan Proclaims March 26th Purple Day
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
South Jordan Proclaims March 26th
Purple Day
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, February 19, 2013 – On February 19th,
2013, South Jordan Mayor Scott L. Osborne officially proclaimed March 26th,
2013 and every subsequent March 26th, Purple Day in the city. Following the efforts of Demi Sintz, Purple
Day Ambassador for South Jordan, and the office of the Mayor, the proclamation
is the first to be signed in the state of Utah this year.
12 year old
Sintz became an Ambassador to raise awareness for all the right reasons:
“If you
asked anyone in my school what they would do if they saw someone have a
seizure, I bet most of them wouldn’t have a clue.” Sintz said. “My little
brother has epilepsy. I became a Purple Day Ambassador to be an advocate for my
brother and to help make people more aware about epilepsy. I want people to
know what to do if they see my brother, or anyone else, having a seizure. It
could happen anywhere. It could save a life if you know what to do!”
She
continued: “I want people to know what a seizure looks like. I want them to
know it will be scary and it will be every time, but you need to be calm. Let
the person know you are there for them. You need to know what to do. I have
learned to be there for my brother and I know it will be ok!”
The
Epilepsy Association of Utah applauds Demi and the City of South Jordan for
dedicating the day to the 150,000 people of Utah, and their families, who live
with the condition.

Purple Day was founded in 2008 by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia,
and named after the internationally recognized colour for epilepsy, lavender.
Purple Day was launched internationally in 2009. The Epilepsy Association
of Nova Scotia and the Anita Kaufmann Foundation in the United States are
the global partners for the Purple Day campaign. UCB Canada Inc. is the
exclusive Canadian biopharmaceutical partner for the 2012 Purple Day campaign.

EAU Announces New Support Groups

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EAU Adds New Support Groups
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, February 12, 2013 –“No person, trying to take responsibility for her or his identity, should have to be so alone. There must be those among whom we can sit down and weep, and still be counted as warriors.” ― Adrienne Rich
The EAU is pleased to announce the creation of 5 new support groups throughout Utah.
“These new additions to our Support Group offerings will allow people to more closely align with those they consider knowledgeable about what they are going through”, said Annette Maughan, President of the Epilepsy Association of Utah. “We understand that, depending on where a person is in their epilepsy journey, they may feel more comfortable with someone their own age, or with similar interests, and to that end, we have created specific groups to help build a more positive experience in living with epilepsy”.
Meeting various times throughout the month, the new groups are specific enough to encourage more openness, education, interaction and in some cases: more fun! We hope to see you there!

Annual Halloween Carnival Announced
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EAU Confirms 2nd Annual Halloween Carnival: Whispers in the Park
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, September 18, 2012 – In its efforts to help increase local Epilepsy awareness, the Epilepsy Association of Utah (EAU) has confirmed they will hold their 2nd Annual Halloween Carnival: Whispers in the Park on October 13th at Weber State University.
“The EAU is pleased to hold numerous events throughout the year, all of which are created to encourage those living with Epilepsy to get out and experience various activities without that fear that a seizure will occur. At EAU events, we expect a seizure. And we plan for it so we take steps to help avoid known triggers,” says Annette Maughan, President of the Epilepsy Association of Utah. She further explains the reasoning behind the significance of a Halloween Carnival by stating, “Halloween is that time when we leave behind who we are and become those things we have always wanted to become -a holiday where masks conceal the person and simple costumes make heroes out of all of us. We are thinking of these masks metaphorically and we are encouraging people living with Epilepsy to show themselves for who they are, to take off their veil and show the world that they do not need a costume to be a hero.” The EAU’s goal is to emphasize to those affected by Epilepsy and to the public that seizures can be scary; yet, when someone learns how to manage a seizure, the fear is eliminated.
The fundraising carnival will include live music & entertainment, food, games, a costume parade, a cake contest, vendors and various activities for all ages. Those interested will be admitted into the carnival grounds free of admission. Date: Saturday October 13th, 2012
